Trip log: RV Trip to Alaska 2014 |
8/4/2014 Day 89 Lee’s Ferry, AZ to Sunset Crater NP; 110 miles Just a slog today, with some road construction that held us up about 15 minutes north of Cameron. Fairly heavy traffic from Cameron to Flagstaff. We got the very end campsite in Sunset Crater at noon for $10, no hookups. The campground is pretty empty and reservations are not done here, we found out.
We met our NAU soccer team Granddaughter, Nicole, for dinner at Wildflower at 5 PM. Boyfriend Joe was invited but couldn’t come. Very nice visit. Nic is benched for this season with her third ACL tear incurred last spring. She’s doing pretty good with her latest knee surgery but it’s a slower recovery than the ones before because of more intensive surgery this time. |
8/3/2014 Day 88 Bryce Canyon NP to Lee’s Ferry, AZ; 162 miles A cloudy and rainy morning in Bryce convinced us to move on instead of staying another day. We found a German bakery in Orderville, got almond croissants and ate them in the RV in their parking lot. Four croissants and two strawberry-rhubarb desserts came to $28.50! We then made a stop at Kanab to visit Best Friends and had a tour of the facility. We did not adopt a dog. |
Next potential choice for a campground was Jacob Lake Campground, but it was still early in the day so we pushed on to Lee’s Ferry just at the west end of Navajo Bridge and 5 miles up the river. This is a delightful place in the Glen Canyon NRA, no hookups, $6 for a pull-through site that required substantial leveling. It also has hordes of small non-biting insects. But it overlooks the Colorado River far below and has a commanding view of the red cliffs of the Marble Canyon.
We visited the Lees Ferry boat launching area where many inflatables were readying for a trip downriver.
Gas has gotten down to $3.75/gallon in Kanab for 87 grade, about the cheapest we’ve found since leaving home. It has rained fairly steady all day. |
8/5/2014 Day 90 Flagstaff to Prescott; 110 miles We left around 7:30 and made a brief stop at Camping World, then home by about 11. The house was still standing and everything looked good. We began the process of cleaning things up and restoring order after the three month trip. |
